Alec woke alone. His searching hand found the sheets and pillows next to him cold and empty. He shot out of bed and into the bathroom, then stood there, feeling foolish when just her scent aroused him.
Especially after the night theyâd just spent together.
Heâd had her every way he could, just as heâd told her. And sheâd had him. He wouldnât have to worry about a future with her, he thought with a wide grin, because theyâd kill each other before the first haze of lust burned away. He stepped to the window, knowing heâd find her walking the cliffs. She was the damnedest woman for braving any weather for the sake of a little exercise. The sky was clear, which meant it was probably frigid out there; her only danger was likely frostbite, but he wasnât about to take chances with her.
He would have loved a shower, but he settled for brushing his teeth and splashing some water in his face to battle back the exhaustion. He threw on clothes and his coat, and headed out. Paige was nowhere in sight, and he felt a lick of panic until he spied her on the beach below, stretching against one of the huge boulders that littered the narrow fringe of shore.
He made his way to the steps cut into the rock, and lost his footing on the fourth or fifth step in his rush to get down to Paige. âRailings,â he muttered, taking the rest of the stairs more carefully, watching for icy patches.
Paige looked up as he came around the outcropping of rock that sheltered the stairs. She wore no makeup, and her skin was rosy with the color brought out by the cold air. She looked impossibly beautiful, even dressed in baggy sweats, an ancient pair of running shoes, and a slicker that was big as a tent. After the nights theyâd shared, he could have sculpted her body from memory, but only a true artist would have been able to capture the genuine beauty that shone from within.
She watched him, eyes as blue and deep as the ocean behind her. She didnât smile, not even teasingly, and he saw, clearly, the vulnerability she usually hid from the world. He could hurt herâthey could hurt each other. If they werenât careful.
âWhy didnât you wake me?â
She gave him a bright, unshadowed smile. âI thought Iâd let you sleep for a while. You were exhausted.â
He stepped forward and kissed her, sweetly, slowly, before he pulled back and rested his cheek against hers. âWe could go back in where itâs warm, and get some rest.â
Paige cupped his cheek and pulled back, far enough for him to see the teasing sparkle in her eyes. âOddly enough, I feel extremely energized this morning.â
âI can work with that.â
She laughed as she stepped back. Alec took her hand, pleased when she didnât pull away. They walked in a companionable silence for a little while, concentrating on navigating the rocky beach.
âWhy do they call it Secret Harbor?â Alec asked after a little while.
